Our Criminal Law practice area students welcomed Deakin Law graduate Luke Murphy to the Deakin Law Clinic for an insightful session on preparing effective Diversion applications.

Diversion is an important non-prosecution outcome that may be available to eligible first-time offenders, making it essential for aspiring criminal lawyers to understand both the legal framework and the practical considerations involved in the process.

Drawing on his previous experience as a Diversion Coordinator in the Magistrates’ Court, Luke provided students with a valuable practitioner perspective on how Diversion applications are assessed and what contributes to a well-prepared application. Through practical examples, he highlighted the importance of understanding each client’s circumstances, gathering appropriate supporting material, and advocating effectively to achieve the best possible outcome for a client.

Luke also discussed his current role at Victoria Legal Aid (VLA), sharing insights into graduate recruitment and the skills, values, and experiences that VLA looks for in early career lawyers. His advice was particularly valuable for students considering careers in criminal law and public interest practice.
