The Generalist Law clinic recently spent a morning with Artemis Evangelidi (LLM, LLB, BSc) Founder of AIPEIA Consulting and former Head of Learning Transformation at the Law Institute of Victoria to workshop wellbeing in the law and how to maintain a healthy mindset in legal practice.

Artemis began the session by discussing the confronting mental health statistics that face students and practitioners in the law. She highlighted that 53% of lawyers reported experiencing at least some psychological distress and 1 in 5 young lawyers reported severe distress[1]. It was emphasised that in law mental health is a significant challenge faced by all practitioners at some stage throughout their career.
She also spoke about how it is important to adopt tools to cope with stress early on in our legal career. This led to a discussion of how each student currently deals with stress in their everyday lives, while Artemis shared how she managed her stress while working as a General Counsel.

Artemis guided the students through several wellbeing techniques including basic meditation and breathing exercises. By reviewing a variety of techniques, it allowed the students to pick and adopt those that work for them. Clearly when it comes to wellbeing each person’s approach will be unique as there is not a one size fits all solution.
Understanding and addressing the mental health challenges of the legal profession is vital to preparing young lawyers as they begin their legal careers. At Deakin Law Clinic we are proud to be able to support our students and provide them with access to wellbeing leaders such as Artemis who is willing to work with us for the benefit of our students and their futures.
